On Screen: Film and Events

Our thoughtfully curated film programme offers an eclectic mix of new releases, blockbusters, international marvels, ground-breaking independent films, and the greatest cinema classics remastered for the big screen. Our weekend matinees, staff picks, special film seasons, and late screenings ensure that all tastes and availabilities are catered to, and our specially devised “Since We’ve Been Gone” series offers an opportunity for our audiences to catch up on some of the best new releases from 2020 and beyond.

One of the wonderful things about being an independent cinema is that we can be selective, dynamic, and progressive in our choices. We’re proud to showcase more unusual or brave films, and strive to respond to what our audiences want in real-time. Whether you’re one of our regulars or visiting us for the first time, we hope you’ll be inspired by our film choices and enjoy the opportunity to choose from a range of genres each time you book.

With our customers’ interests at the heart of all we do, we also aim to bring our communities closer to film through an exciting programme of special events, Q&As, and post-film discussions, gathering together some of the greatest minds of the industry, from filmmakers and directors to authors and academics.

Film is for everyone

Here at Tyneside Cinema, we strongly believe that film is for everyone and, as the home of great film in our city, we believe it’s up to us to make our programme fully available and accessible to all. We’re committed to continuing our £1 ticketing scheme for asylum seekers, refugees, and those in receipt of benefits and strive to ensure that our doors are open to as many people as possible.

We also run a number of accessible screenings, including dementia-friendly cinema (a space for those with dementia and their carers to relax and enjoy film) and access cinema (which caters to those with sensory needs and autism).  Please note that, due to the vulnerability of these audiences, we’re currently unable to safely facilitate access screenings.  However, we’re working hard to ensure that our film programme is inclusive of these valued guests, whether it be in our physical building or remotely. Please bear with us while we devise a safe way to move forward, and please know that you’re not forgotten.

Filmmakers in the making

Children and young people

Tyneside Cinema is passionate about supporting children and young people to explore, create, learn, and express themselves through film, and our learning and participation team are continually thinking of new and exciting ways to engage students and cater to their curriculum. Children aged 10 and above can choose from a range of filmmaking courses, and for older children and young people foreign language films are used as learning aids in our specifically curated workshops. Over the last three years we’ve welcomed over 15,000 children and young people into our venue to engage with and learn more about film.

Artist Opportunities

We’re committed to helping emerging artists and filmmakers to create innovative work, enter international film festivals, and reach new audiences. Artist opportunities include our bi-annual Open Call (inviting proposals from curators and artists), The Rough Cut (a free event for artists working with moving image to share their new work and work-in-progress), and New Creatives, which welcomes applicants from any artistic discipline and especially those with little or no artistic background. We welcome writers, sound artists, dancers, filmmakers, poets, storytellers, visual artists, game designers – you name it! If you have a cracking idea, we’d love to bring it to life on both the big and the small screen (you may have seen previous New Creatives graduates on BBC Four, or seen Random Acts when it aired on Channel 4 a few years ago).

Hires and events

Over the last few months we’ve been busy revising our offering to ensure the safety and comfort of our audiences in what continues to be a hugely challenging time for us all. As well as striving to bring you the very best in world and independent cinema, we’re pleased to be able to facilitate socially-distanced conferences and weddings and the private hire of our Gallery and Roxy screens for social bubbles. If you’re looking for a unique, creative, and historic venue to host your event or special occasion, our imaginative events team will create an unforgettable experience for you and your guests.
