Film season

After a year’s hiatus, Tyneside Cinema is delighted to return with our annual Best of the Year season. Your chance to catch up on the cinematic masterpieces you may have missed over the past few months - or to rewatch some recent favourites on the big screen once again - this year’s Best of the Year is a bumper edition!

Bringing the best of 2020 as well as 2021 back to the big screen (many for the first time at Tyneside), we’re delighted to present recent gems such as the Oscar-winning Nomadland, Another Round, Sound of Metal, Judas and the Black Messiah, and a special screening of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on a brand new 35mm print; all the way through to recent audience favourites such as The French Dispatch, Drive My Car, Dune, Limbo, and yes, James Bond.

From the refugee experience on the islands of Scotland to off-world adventures, and from the inner workings of the royal household to wheeler-dealing on the American frontier, this season encompasses the very best films the world of cinema had to offer us in the past 24 months.

Taking in films from the UK, France, Argentina, Hungary, the USA, Romania, Japan, Italy, Brazil, The Ivory Coast, Denmark and elsewhere, it features luminaries like Jane Campion, Wes Anderson, Celine Sciamma, Leos Carax, Kelly Reichardt, Ridley Scott, Paul Schrader, Miranda July, Pablo Larrain, Paolo Sorrentino, Thomas Vinterberg, Radu Jude, Todd Haynes, The Velvet Underground, and Denis Villeneuve; as well as the great filmmakers of tomorrow, including Mona Fastvold, Nagy Denes, Sean Durkin, Ahmir-Khalib Thompson, Rebecca Hall, Aleem Khan, Ben Sharrock, Prano Bailey-Bond, and many more.

Vital contemplations of the world in which we live, explorations of our history, this year’s major Oscar winners, hilarious comedies, creepy chillers, and mind-blowing escapism: it’s all here.

Delve into the very best that recent cinema has to offer with us from 27 December way into January 2022, and experience a selection of films that will wow, shock, move and surprise in equal measure. See you in the cinema!
