Over three boldly imagined and playfully executed chapters we follow the discredited, and increasingly disgruntled, Emi through the streets of Bucharest, probed to consider along the way who, or what, is really at fault.

The question is, should she have known better than to make the tape in the first place, does her filming it make her unfit to educate the young, or is it the underlying reasons behind the community’s moral backlash against her that really deserve to be scrutinised?

Scooping the prestigious Golden Bear award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, Bad Luck Banging or Looney Porn is far more than a story about a sex tape gone wrong.

Radu Jude follows up I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians with another absolutely ruthless satire on the hypocrisy of conservatism in Romania (and Europe at large), bringing in an even wider set of cultural and historical references during his film’s second chapter. And having made his film during the pandemic, the politics of mask wearing is also brilliantly and hilariously dissected.

Benefitting from some of Romania’s finest acting talent, including Beyond the Hills star Katia Pascariu in the lead role, this uncompromisingly provocative delight of a film explores important questions in ways that will have you laughing, cringing, and everything in between, with an ending that you’ll scarecely believe.
