Following their triumphant film debut in 2019, Julian Fellowes returns with another big screen Crawley family adventure in Downton Abbey: A New Era. This second cinematic chapter for television’s favourite aristocratic household sees Lord Grantham (Hugh Boneville) take the Crawley’s and their staff overseas and away from their country estate for an adventure on the French Riviera.
The driving force of A New Era is the inimitable Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), whose sudden inheritance of a villa overseas sparks revelations about a long-passed love affair that takes the whole household by surprise. Soon the inhabitants of Downton are packing their suitcases and heading to the South of France, where they will uncover more of the Countess’ mysterious past, as well as experiencing some new adventures of their own.
The returning cast of A New Era includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern as Earl and Lady Grantham, Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith. Rob James-Collier as Thomas, Joanne Froggatt as Anna, and Jim Carter as Mr. Carson. Joining the fray are new characters played by Dominic West, Hugh Dancy and Laura Haddock, in what promises to be another eventful story full of incident, mishap and revelation, with the Crawley’s and their staff adapting to a rapidly changing world as the 1930s and signs of modernity fast approach.
