A carnival clairvoyant-turned-con artist pursues fame, fortune, and an escape from his own past in Guillermo del Toro’s masterful, gothic film noir.

Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro’s follow up to the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water is another mysterious, stunningly beautiful reimagining of Classic Hollywood, this time trading in the monster movie for the shady world of film noir, and an all-star cast led by Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, and Willem Dafoe.

Stanton (Cooper in a career-best performance) is a man running from a mysterious past when he happens on a travelling carnival. Ingratiating himself with Zeena (Collette) and Molly (Mara), his talent for reading people soon establishes him as a star attraction, before a pursuit of fame of fortune leads him on a collision course with his terrifying destiny, and a mysterious psychoanalyst played by Cate Blanchett.

A tale of lies, truth and performance that takes in a stunningly realised fairground setting as well as the claustrophobic streets of 1940s New York, Nightmare Alley is a ‘dark, sometimes feverish look at American striving’, and a worthy entry into the filmography of del Toro (which includes Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, the Devil’s Backbone and Crimson Peak), who has resurrected the dark heart of film noir in a way in which only he can. One of the year’s most stunningly beautiful (and grippingly dark) films, Nightmare Alley is a masterpiece that demands to be seen on the big screen.
