We follow Shola (a.k.a Rocks), a popular teenager living in central London with her mother and little brother, Emmanuel. Rocks’ life is turned upside down when her mother suddenly leaves, plummeted into adulthood far too quickly. Determined not to be separated from her brother and avoid going into care at all costs, Rocks leaves her home and hides around London with the help of her loyal friends.
Wild, emotional and brimming with life; this is an unforgettable portrait of teenage girlhood set in a vividly realised contemporary London.
The creative team worked closely with a young cast of unknowns to create this wildly authentic coming-of-age tale. Ever since it opened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Rocks has been raking in the five-star reviews. British cinema at it’s finest; we sincerely recommend this film.
“An energetic five-star triumph” – The Guardian
“Utterly unmissable” – Time Out
As part of our International Women’s Day season, we’re also going to pair some female-directed, New Creatives North shorts with select movies. Rocks will include Afro Hair Rituals, directed by Amber Akaunu, commissioned as part of New Creatives North.
