Bergman’s 1975 masterpiece The Magic Flute (Trollflöjten) stars Josef Köstlinger as Tamino, the young man determined to rescue the beautiful Princess Pamina (Irma Urrila) from the clutches of parental evil. Equipped with the titular mystical instrument, which possesses the power to change the hearts of men, Tamino sets out on his perilous quest, to conquer evil and find true love.
Originally commissioned for Swedish television, the extraordinary end result granted it a big screen run of its own, as distinguished auteur Ingmar Bergman transforms Mozart’s opera into a dreamlike cinematic spectacular. The Magic Flute foregrounds the theatrical nature of the production to spellbinding effect, with proceedings taking place on a ravishing 18th-century theatre set.
