This double-bill, selected by Kirsten in Operations, is a joyously epic romp through ancient curses, sandstorms, battles and grisly resurrection, led by the chemistry of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Kirsten’s choice is a rollicking action-adventure double-bill that takes inspiration from Boris Karloff’s original Mummy (dir. Karl Freund, 1932) while embracing the fun of its own uniquely late-90s/early ‘00s spirit.

Bounding between comedy-horror and the bygone romanticism of fantasy epics, Brendon Fraser (George of the Jungle, Bedazzled) plays the dashing Rick O’Connell, alongside Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener, The Lobster, Disobedience) as Evelyn, a coy librarian turned Egyptologist. What follows is a joyously epic meet-cute classic of ancient curses, amateur archaeology and a riot of early CGI effects.

In these two films, director Stephen Sommers (Van Helsing, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) balanced endearingly goofy chemistry with a blockbuster rush of spectacle to usher in a new era for the ancient undead…

Kirsten says “The Mummy and Mummy Returns are the very best of those action-adventure films that were spawned from a more carefree era of blockbusters. An era when it was entirely possible to be funny, entertaining and romantic, while simultaneously encountering absolute peril from flesh eating scarabs and a resurrected 3000-year-old high priest, hellbent on destruction and bringing his lover back from the dead. Name a more iconic pair than Evie and Rick, I’ll wait. While I’m waiting, welcome to the Brenaissance!”
