The first-ever Irish language film to win the Best Film Prize at the 2022 Irish Film and Television Awards (even beating Branagh’s fan-favourite Belfast) Colm Bairéad’s debut feature The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) follows Cáit (Catherine Clinch) as she is taken in by a foster couple in rural Ireland during the summer of 1981.

Away from her dysfunctional and ever-expanding family, Cáit blossoms in the care of childless couple Eibhlín and Seán as she is finally shown the love and attention she has been denied for most of her young life.

Adapted by the director from Claire Keegan’s short story Foster, this delicately-handled coming-of-age drama is as understated and quiet as its protagonist and yet culminates in an intensely moving finale.

Accompanied by an elegant soundtrack courtesy of Stephen Rennicks (whose credits include the Oscar-winning Room and Normal People), The Quiet Girl is a poignant, unassuming tale of childhood loneliness, grief and love.

Coming to Tyneside Cinema on 13 May 2022.
