Martin McDonagh (Six Shooter, In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) changed tack from the dominant comedy presence in earlier works to tackle a serious topic in a more subtle tone.
Seven months after her teenage daughter was murdered, Mildred (Frances McDormand) rents Three Billboards with the text “Raped while dying”, “And still no arrests,” and “How come, Chief Willoughby?” written on them. Mildred faces pushback from the townspeople and the authorities including the bad-tempered police officer Jason Dixon (Sam Rockwell) and Willoughby himself (Woody Harrelson).
What follows is an honest, emotional and somewhat challenging ride as Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell deliver one of their career-best performances which earned them both Academy Awards. Three Billboards has rightly earned its reputation for being one of the best films to come from the 2010s.
