This Tyneside Kids Club screening is shown as part of our International Women's Day Season – championing and showcasing female voices, talent and stories

Directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), this is a vibrant true story of Phiona Mutesi, whose life drastically changes after she’s introduced to the game of chess.

Mira Nair

Queen of Katwe, tells the real-life story of Phiona who, growing up in a slum in Katwe, spends her days helping her mother to care for her younger siblings and selling maize in the marketplace. Things suddenly change when Phiona meets a local missionary who teaches her to play chess. Her natural gift and intelligence, along with a lot of hard work and support from her family and community, give Phiona the chance to leave behind her life of poverty.
