Uptown Girls (2003) is the latest pick in our ongoing Team Choice series - where a member of staff gets the reins for a one-off screening of a film close to their heart. This time, it’s the choice of our Marketing Coordinator, Emily Duff, whose passion for girlhood and costuming in film makes this screening extra special.

Unfortunately no Audio Description track is available for this feature.

“A lover of coming-of-age films that explore girlhood – and of both Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning – Uptown Girls still took me by surprise with how deeply it affected me. It’s visually stunning and tender in its depiction of female friendship. From the music to the dresses to the positioning in each scene, it’s a film that will stop you in your tracks. I haven’t been able to forget about it.” – Emily Duff, Marketing Coordinator

Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a carefree New York socialite and the daughter of a rock ’n’ roll legend – but when her inheritance vanishes, she’s suddenly forced to grow up. Taking a job as a nanny to Ray (Dakota Fanning), a precocious and tightly wound 8-year-old, Molly’s world is turned upside down in the most heartwarming and unexpectedly hilarious way.

Full of early-2000s fashion and surprisingly tender moments, Uptown Girls is a bittersweet coming-of-age story for both its leads and a nostalgic classic that lingers long after the credits roll.

We’re also delighted to present this screening from a 35mm print.
