Dreyer’s first foray into sound cinema retains the largely dialogue-free, atmosphere-driven leanings of silent cinema, following Allan Grey (Nicolas de Gunzburg), a tourist with a penchant for following and researching the supernatural.

But in this cautionary genre tale, he faces the wrath of meddling with the uncanny, uncovering a vampyr curse during his stay at an eerie old inn near the town of Courtempierre…

This under-the-skin unsettling horror tale from 1932 was partially adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 collection of stories ‘In a Glass Darkly‘, and holds a potent, nightmarish power in its crafting of atmosphere even now, ninety years on from its initial release.

This trailblazing, defining vampire film has been lovingly restored to this new 2K restoration by The Danish Film Institute, making for an unmissable cinematic treat for cineastes to remember.
