If you are a musical theatre fan, you will be well-acquainted with the romantic street-lore of West Side Story and may recognise the fabulous Rita Moreno who played Anita, now playing Valentina, widow to the old-timer peacemaker Doc of the original film.
Spielberg also brought Moreno on as an executive producer in this glowing homage to the play, original film and soundtrack, which he (and many of his cast) grew up entranced by.
If you have never experienced the joy of West Side Story, then you might not know these star-crossed lovers from two rival gangs.
It is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but also offers a comment of the integration of Puerto Rican community into the wider New York population.
This was a story that reflected the America of 1957 but, with race divisions in some spaces feeling wider than ever, Spielberg’s West Side Story is as relevant today as the original was back then.
