- Tyneside Cinema Patron and musician, Paul Smith (Maxïmo Park)
While our beloved Tyneside Cinema is temporarily closed due to COVID-19, your support’s more crucial than ever. With your help, we can work to ensure that Tyneside Cinema is back up and running as soon as it’s safe to open our doors again.
We’ve had an overwhelming response to our #myTynesideCinema appeal, which we launched at the end of March.
Your support, together with flexibility from our landlord, Arts Council England and the British Film Institute, means we’ve been able to secure our short-term future.
However, longer-term, the picture is less clear. 80% of our income comes from tickets sales, events and revenue from our bars and café. While we’re closed, we receive no income. To safeguard our team and organisation into the future, we’ve furloughed the majority of our staff. But it still costs £36,000 each month in essential building and on-going costs to run Tyneside Cinema while in lock down.
Although our doors are closed, we’re working behind the scenes to:
- Help pay for the maintenance of our beautiful Grade II listed building and our facilities.
- Support our small, but dedicated team who remain working to keep our cinema viable, and develop and deliver our future programmes.
Like many Arts and Culture organisations, our future is still uncertain, and we’re unable to put a timescale on the situation. Therefore, we’ll continue with our fundraising campaign over the coming weeks and months. We’ll also continue exploring all other avenues available to us, ensuring that our programmes in film and learning, are more vibrant and relevant than ever when we do re-open.
Running an independent cinema is financially challenging, even more so in these unsettling times.
Ticket sales, events, cafe and bar sales account for over 80% of our total income. When we’re closed, this stops. We receive a small amount of grant funding to support our work engaging young people; ensuring they have access to enjoy film and filmmaking. This money also helps us make our programmes accessible to everyone.
Here’s how our income breaks down:
Core Funding refers to the grants and longer-term support, including funding from Arts Council England.
