Access Cinema

Our access cinema includes; Relaxed Screenings, Dementia Friendly Cinema, Tyneside Baby and Kids Club and daily Hard-of-Hearing screenings.

We love film, so we want as many of you as possible to experience the magic of the big screen with us at the Tyneside Cinema.

Accessible cinema screenings are our first step into widening the access to film, we have specific screenings for people who are autistic, who have sensory needs, people living with dementia and those who are hard-of-hearing.

We are always keen to hear from you about your acceptability needs and how we can improve your access to film, so please contact us at

Relaxed Screenings

Our Relaxed Screenings are for people if all ages with autism, learning difficulties and/or other sensory needs and their families. It’s a safe environment to enjoy some classic films that the whole family will love.

Relaxed screenings are on the second Sunday of every month midday (12:00).

We make sure that these screenings take place in a relaxed environment, so, this means that:

All the films are presented with the sound slightly lower than usual and the lights up a little

You are able to move around as much as you want to and make noise during the film

There are no adverts and trailers before the films and they start bang-on 12:00 noon

We have a chill-out space for you, in case you would like a break in a quiet environment during the film

Also, where we can we try to make sure the film is captioned subtitled. The captioned subs aren’t always available to us, so we will flag this on our website, or just ask at Box Office.

Our relaxed screenings are open to everyone, although due to sensory sensitivities experienced by some of our guests, we don’t recommend these screenings for children under 2-years-old.

Tickets are £6 each per person, and carers go free.

Dementia Friendly Cinema

Dementia Friendly Cinema is our popular screening programme for people living with dementia and their families and carers.

Each month we screen a classic musical or film for people with dementia. Thanks to generous ongoing support from you, our audience, we’re able to provide free tickets for their carers or family members.

Our staff are Dementia Friends and are on hand with a warm welcome and a cup of tea.

We screen the films with the lights up a little and sound down a touch in our beautiful Classic auditorium.

Come along, sing along and above all, have fun! These films are open to anyone and everyone.

You should note that we have limited accessible seating. If you do need wheelchair accessible or stair-free seating please get in touch with us to arrange it a few days before the film.
