Two lovesick cops (Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung) briefly cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out stand in downtown Hong Kong. One of them, known as Cop 223 (Takeshi Kaneshiro) is seeking to get over his ex-lover. Setting himself a deadline to emotionally move on, every day he buys a tin of pineapple with the expiration date of 1 May, counting down to when his heart will no longer be broken. A mysterious woman in a blond wig (Brigitte Lin) will either prove his rescue or his ruin.
Meanwhile Cop 663 (Tony Leung) is similarly lovesick. But when his ex drops a spare set of his keys at a local cafe, the free spirited waitress who works there (Faye Wong) takes it upon herself to improve his life.
So begins Wong Kar Wai’s breakout film, a beautiful, atmospheric and woozy ode to Hong Kong, millennial anxiety and the possibilities of love. Instantly iconic, it’s one of the most gorgeous and romantic films ever made, and a masterpiece of New Wave romance.
