Set three years before the Hong Kong Handover, Cold War 1994 travels back to a city on the edge. When a prominent business tycoon is kidnapped, the investigation pulls rival officers, organised crime figures and British colonial officials into a web of corruption and competing ambition.
Written and directed by Longman Leung, the film jumps between two timeframes: 2017, following the disappearance of Hong Kong’s newly appointed Secretary for Security, and the main 1994 storyline itself, where a kidnapping plot unfolds against the twilight of colonial rule.
The film brings together an extraordinary ensemble, with Hong Kong legends Chow Yun-fat (Hard Boiled), Aaron Kwok (Cold War), Tony Leung Ka-fai (The Shadow’s Edge) alongside Daniel Wu (New Police Story), returning to Hong Kong cinema after a six-year absence. Also starring Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Hugh Bonneville (Paddington).
