Based on the 1975 musical which was in turn based on the 1927 silent film – a crime-comedy caper directed by Cecil B. DeMille – Chicago sings its way through the intoxicating glitz of nightclub stardom before a descent into murder, prison and courtroom drama.
Hardworking chorus girl Roxie Heart has ambitions for the spotlight, in a Golden Globe-winning performance by Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Judy); she looks on longingly at the success of sultry lead Velma Kelly, a stunning Academy Award-winning turn from Catherine Zeta Jones (Entrapment, High Fidelity) channelling the bob-haired flapper, Louise Brooks.
The decadent but precarious world of Prohibition-era debauchery and Jazz leads both women into acts of violence, later encountering one another in prison, whereupon we meet the manipulative charms of Richard Gere (Days of Heaven, Pretty Woman) as the notorious criminal lawyer, Billy Flynn.
This is a seductively camp and outlandish musical of fame, greed and corruption; replete with razzle-dazzle and bursting with swagger, sequins and showstopping classics!
