In the 2001 animated classic Shrek, the titular loveable ogre (Mike Myers) sets out beyond the swamp on a perilous journey to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from the clutches of the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). Joined on the quest by a fast talking Donkey (Eddie Murphy), the dynamic duo travel to Duloc, meeting a host of star-studded fairy tale characters along the path – before entering the lair of a towering fiery dragon.
In Shrek 2, Shrek and Fiona are now happily married. Along with their trusty sidekick Donkey, the loved-up couple travel to the land of Far Far Away to meet Fiona’s parents King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews). But a meddling Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) is dead set on Fiona marrying Prince Charming (Rupert Everett). It’s up to Shrek, Donkey and new recruit Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to thwart her villainous scheme.
A double bill of two bona-fide animated classics this summer at Tyneside Cinema? That’ll do, Donkey. That’ll do.
