Roots to Routes
A not to be missed opportunity to watch award winning and acclaimed South Asian films on the big screen for this year’s Roots to Routes South Asian Heritage Month theme!

Tyneside Cinema has been working with Aman Dhillon at ReelN and Film Hub North to bring you a fantastic line up of films, a unique programme with classic, new, independent, Bollywood and British films exploring themes of identity, coming of age, travel and independence, all promising to evoke emotion, get you thinking, educate about South Asian Heritage and celebrate the South Asian community living in and around Newcastle upon Tyne.
Aman says, “I am so excited that Tyneside Cinema is showcasing a South Asian programme for this year’s South Asian Heritage Month and am thrilled to have curated a programme where we have taken the ‘Roots to Routes’ theme and curated something for everyone, classics that ignite nostalgia, films that are relatable, funny, for the family, thought-provoking and LGBTQIA+ themed. We will have Q&As with award winning film talent, an opportunity to hear from the experts whether you are interested in the film or a career in filmmaking and this is a great opportunity for the local South Asian community to stay engaged with the cinema and work with us to curate future and ongoing programmes.”
The season opens on 18th July with Footprints on Water and a special Q&A with award winning director Nathalia Syam. Set among Birmingham’s undocumented immigrant community, the story follows a father desperately searching for his missing daughter. With no legal status, the family can’t go to the police and must navigate a world where they are invisible.
