Come Undone This Valentine’s With “Wuthering Heights” At Tyneside Cinema
“Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
Spoken by Catherine Earnshaw about Heathcliff, the two lovers at the centre of “Wuthering Heights,” it’s a line that leaves little room for gentleness. This is obsession. Ferocity. A fatalistic love, forged in isolation, where desire and identity become impossible to separate.
A love story that still burns
Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights” has always been difficult, complicated, and deeply unsettling, and that’s exactly why it endures. Published in 1847, it remains one of the most tragic love stories ever put to paper, a romance that tips quickly into cruelty and longing.
Fennell’s new adaptation doesn’t try to soften that edge. Instead, it leans into it.
Starring Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, this is a “Wuthering Heights” charged with heat, tension and excess. Romantic, intoxicating, and a little unhinged. Fennell has described her connection to the novel as “primal”, something that “cracked [her] open” as a teenager, and that intensity runs through every frame of the film.
Backed by Linus Sandgren’s lush cinematography (La La Land, Dune: Part Three) and an original soundtrack by Charli xcx, this is a version of “Wuthering Heights” made unapologetically for the big screen.
Made for Valentine’s (even if it breaks your heart)
Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” is about desire pushed too far, about people who can’t stop hurting one another even when they know better. It’s messy, sexy, devastating, and completely singular. For couples who want something darker, bolder, and more memorable than the usual rom-com, this is a perfect Valentine’s choice.
To mark the occasion, we’ve created a series of wraparound events that let you experience the film in different ways, whether you’re feeling creative, indulgent, or celebratory.
