The Last Showgirl is a Must-See for Every Woman
Anderson’s latest film, The Last Showgirl, may appear similar on the surface, but behind the glitz and glamour, the life of a Vegas showgirl is not what it seems.
On the 10th of February, Tyneside Cinema hosted a special screening of the film with a recorded Q&A from Anderson herself. In the interview, the actress reflected on her preparation for the role and discussed how she had developed valuable relationships with real-life showgirls during her research into this iconic world.
Interestingly, she shared that when she was sent the script her (now former) agent immediately declined the offer. Thankfully, after Gia Coppola sent it directly to Anderson’s son, Brandon Thomas Lee, she was able to read the script for herself and discover the role she was born to play.
If you have been following Pamela’s career, you will know about the star’s recent decision to channel her natural beauty through attending red carpet premieres makeup-free. A choice many media outlets have described as ‘brave’ but what Anderson believed to be unnoticeable as she is so comfortable in her own skin. The star discussed this in the Q&A, expressing how she was able to connect with important parts of herself through playing a role like Shelly. As an audience member, you can feel just how painful and momentous such a journey has been for both Pamela and her character.
Following the story about a showgirl named Shelly, who has been a dancer for the ‘Razzle Dazzle’ for more than thirty years, there’s far more to Coppola’slatest feature than its large feather boa budget.
Knowing nothing else but the thrill of life on the stage, and having chosen it above all other aspects of her life, the film begins with Shelly being told that the historic show is scheduled to end. This news is hard to accept, and as the younger women of the show go on to audition for other roles, Shelly finds her place in the limelight to be quickly fading.
Exploring motherhood, societal pressures, and the fears that come with growing older, it is safe to say Pamela Anderson gives the performance of a lifetime.
The Last Showgirl is an introspective and moving new release. Every woman must see this film.
