The Odyssey on 35mm at Tyneside Cinema

Some films deserve to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is undoubtedly one of them.

When the eagerly anticipated epic arrives at Tyneside Cinema on 17 July, audiences will have the rare opportunity to experience it on 35mm film, with Tyneside one of only a handful of cinemas in the UK selected to screen the film in this format.

For cinema lovers across Newcastle and the North East, it’s a chance to experience one of the year’s biggest releases in a way that’s becoming increasingly uncommon.

A rare opportunity to see a new release on film

Adapted from Homer’s legendary epic poem, The Odyssey follows Odysseus on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Featuring an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Tom Holland, the film promises the scale and ambition audiences have come to expect from Christopher Nolan.

While digital projection has become the industry standard, screenings of brand new films on 35mm are now exceptionally rare. For many film enthusiasts, that’s what makes these screenings so special.

Dan Lauder, Head of Cinema at Tyneside Cinema, said:

“We’re very lucky to be selected as one of only a handful of cinemas that have been provided the opportunity to play The Odyssey in 35mm, making the viewing experience at the cinema for this film truly unique.”

Why does 35mm matter?

There’s a reason audiences still seek out films projected on celluloid.

A 35mm print carries a texture, warmth and character that many believe can’t be perfectly recreated digitally. Every screening is a physical projection of the film itself, creating an experience that feels distinctly different from digital cinema.

As Dan explains:

“Both formats can provide an excellent viewing experience, but a film projected in 35mm can provide an authenticity in its colour tones and textures that digital cinema can’t always replicate. Digital screenings will be free of the blemishes and marks that can be found on a poorly maintained 35mm print, but can also lack the character that a print provides.”

Whether you’re a lifelong cinephile or simply curious to experience film projection for the first time, these screenings offer a rare opportunity to see one of the year’s most anticipated releases presented in a format with more than a century of cinematic history behind it.

Keeping the craft of film projection alive

Tyneside Cinema is one of the few remaining venues in the UK still equipped to project 35mm film, allowing audiences to experience both classic and contemporary cinema as generations of filmgoers have before them.

“We’re blessed to be one of the few remaining venues in the country that still operates 35mm projectors, making us one of the destinations to see past and present films on film,” says Dan.

That commitment to preserving traditional film projection means Newcastle will be one of the few places in the country where audiences can experience The Odyssey on 35mm during its initial release.

Join us for our Odyssey Greek Feast

To celebrate opening night, we’re also hosting a special Odyssey Greek Feast on 17 July.

The evening begins with a Mediterranean-inspired banquet celebrating the story’s ancient Greek roots before guests take their seats for a special 35mm screening of the film. It’s a one-night-only event that brings together food, storytelling and cinema in true epic fashion.
