Set in the distant future world of Arrakis, the home of an invaluable spice for which wars are waged, Dune follows Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) in the dynastic, sprawling battle for control of the planet, as House Atreides takes on House Harkonnens, led by the formidable Baron Vladimir (Kenneth McMillan).
Though much-derided upon initial release – even by Lynch himself – the gloriously idiosyncratic Dune has seen an affectionate reappraisal over time.
This is not only due to its madcap, surreal twist on the sci-fi genre on an enormous, blockbuster scale (with then-groundbreaking visual effects work), but also thanks to its unlikely, suitably eclectic cast, comprising Lynch veteran Kyle MacLachlan in the leading role alongside the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart and Sting.
