A richly textured travelogue of India, and emotionally rewarding, slow-burn story of disparate souls connecting, Mia Hansen-Løve's 2018 escapist drama boasts a spirited breakout turn from Aarshi Banerjee in the titular role.

We follow Gabriel (Hansen-Løve regular Roman Kolinka), a war reporter, who, along with his colleague Frédéric (Alex Descas), has recently been freed from a harrowing hostage situation in Syria.

Feeling disconnected from life in Paris, he journeys to Goa on sabbatical, on the path toward his mother’s home in Mumbai.

It’s there he meets Maya, the daughter of his godfather, and the two experience an inexplicable burgeoning connection, as Gabriel seeks to battle the demons from the fallout of his trauma…

Screened at TIFF in 2018 as part of its Special Presentations strand, Maya is maturely understated, but contains a creeping emotional heft throughout in navigating trauma & the pain of survivor’s guilt.

Maya benefits from Hansen-Løve’s skillful imbuing of warmth and catharsis, wonderfully utilising the surroundings of India to tell a soulful story of rebuilding a life.

This film is screening at Tyneside Cinema as a part of our season Things To Come: The Films of Mia Hansen-Løve, click here to find out more.
