“Bud” Baxter (Lemmon) is an endearingly well-meaning insurance clerk who lets senior mangers use his apartment for their extramarital affairs, a favour he hopes will be repaid by promotion.
As office politics and the personal and private begin to tangle, Bud’s control of the situation begins to slip.
The opportunist strategy becomes more and more risky, further complicated by the introduction of Fran (MacLaine) who soon becomes entangled in the precarious back and forth between the tyranny of the office and the amorous oasis of the apartment.
