Billy Wilder’s caustic film about a screenwriter (William Holden) who becomes embroiled in the comeback fantasy of a faded actress ironically led to the career resurrection of silent film star Gloria Swanson. As Norma Desmond, she gives one of cinema’s most iconic performances, in one of the great films about fame and Hollywood.
