In the Mouth of Madness sees Carpenter go full meta, in a gloriously fun romp about a horror author named Sutter Cane, whose creations have the habit of coming to life.
Sam Neill plays the jaded insurance investigator sent to get to the bottom of Cane’s mysterious disappearance and, finding himself trapped in the creepy New England town of Hobb’s End, soon succumbs to Cane’s horrifying creations.
A nested doll of nightmares within nightmares, In the Mouth of Madness is one of the great post-modern horrors, expertly treading the line between fiction and reality, and once again riffing on its director’s previous work.
