Alternative Christmas
A new addition in 2023 and already a beloved strand of our annual Christmas programme, Alternative Christmas returns for 2024 with another fantastic selection of leftfield festive films from around the world.
From yuletide winter romances to sly digs at the concept of Christmas cheer and even dystopian sci-fi, these titles offer some fun alternative Christmas viewing, which are either the perfect compliment to more traditional festive fair, or alternatively fresh viewing for those who may have seen the standard classics one too many times!
Favourites from last year return – welcome back The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Eyes Wide Shut, Tokyo Godfathers and more – whilst we also introduce a cinematically spectacular and wildly varied selection of new Alternative Christmas titles, from Martin McDonagh’s beloved In Bruges to Terry Gilliam’s science fiction classic Brazil, and from touchstone 90s potboiler L.A. Confidential to Wong Kar Wai’s mesmeric futuristic romance 2046.
All of these films are either set at Christmas or have a clearly festive setting or feel, and we think they make great additions to our December lineup. We hope you enjoy them!
