Kaneko’s Commissary (金子差入店)

Earnest and hardworking KANEKO Shinji (MARUYAMA Ryuhei) runs a small commissary service, delivering items to prisons on behalf of inmates’ families.

One day, his son’s classmate and local friend is found murdered, leaving Shinji’s family shocked. Soon after, Shinji receives a request from the killer’s mother to deliver goods to her unrepentant son, KOJIMA Takashi (KITAMURA Takumi). Dutiful to his profession, he accepts, but is met by scorn and disgust, which rocks his belief in his profession.

Meanwhile, Shinji frequently encounters a teenager named NINOMIYA Sachi (KAWAGUCHI Mana) in the prison meeting room. She claims her intention is to meet the middle-aged former yakuza member (KISHITANI Goro) who killed her mother, but her real motive is yet to be revealed…

Based on Japan’s little-known prison commissary system, director FURUKAWA Go masterfully tells an original story of conflicted emotions and delicate human bonds, revealing the truths that lie beneath the surface. His feature debut also carries a strong sense of realism, set in this unusual environment.
