Sacramento, California. Free-spirited 17-year-old Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson (Saoirse Ronan, Little Women) sets her sights on a faraway prestigious college as life at her Catholic high school draws to a close.
Navigating growing up and preparing to leave home, she also grapples with the trials of young love – with theatre kid Danny (Lucas Hedges, Manchester By The Sea), and later with too-cool-for-school Kyle (Timothée Chalamet, Beautiful Boy). But the imminent new chapter in her life causes tension with her fiercely protective, if overbearing, mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), who struggles to come to terms with letting her precious daughter go.
A mother-daughter cinematic treasure for the ages, Lady Bird is a perfectly pitched, warmly comedic coming-of-age gem, and a note-perfect first feature for Greta Gerwig as solo writer-director.
