A small hospital in Yorkshire acts as a beacon of hope within the local community. When the future of the geriatric ward is thrown into uncertainty, it triggers a push to bring media attention to honouring their most distinguished nurse, Sister Gilpin, portrayed by the wonderful Jennifer Saunders. Alongside Saunders, the film stars a host of stellar British acting talent, including Dame Judi Dench, Russell Tovey, David Bradley and Charleson award winner Bally Gill, who each provide stand-out performances that encompass the colourful and complex qualities of the eclectic array of patients, workers and visitors of the ward.
A resoundingly touching, heartfelt exploration of what it is to be at the end of life, both as individuals and within end-of-life care, Allelujah also skilfully examines the systematic decay of the British healthcare system. As ever, the inimitable Alan Bennett brings an element of social study to his work, focusing on mundane situations, but managing to communicate the importance of exploring joy and pain within the stories of ordinary people, counteracted with a distinctly British sense of biting humour and wit.
