As you may have heard, Tyneside Cinema has been facing the threat of closure throughout 2023. With cuts to our funding, audiences yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, and spiralling costs on everything from electricity to the food and drink we sell, we have faced an existential crisis, coming very close to running out of money.

In April 2023 we launched an urgent fundraising campaign called #LoveTynesideCinema to raise enough money to keep the cinema open until the end of the year. At the same time, we have been actively seeking external funding to secure the cinema’s future beyond that point.

Thanks to you, our #LoveTynesideCinema fundraising campaign has now raised £100,000 from nearly 11,000 individual donations, which combined with the success of films like Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Old Oak and Tish, has just kept us afloat up to now.

As a supporter of local independent cinema, we want to say a huge thank you, from everyone here at Tyneside Cinema. The cinema simply wouldn’t be here today without you.

We believe that we are now close to securing the funding which will ensure a positive future for the cinema and are feeling incredibly optimistic about the future. We aim to update you all with some very positive news early in the New Year, and you will be hearing more from us very soon.

In the meantime, we still need your support! So whether you join us to watch your favourite Christmas film, see a brilliant new release, attend one of our special events, buy a Friends membership as a festive gift, or pop in for a drink or a bite to eat, you’ll be helping us keep the doors open and ensure the future of independent cinema in the North East. We do hope you’ll join us to celebrate a very special holiday season.

With good holiday cheer and hope for the future, we hope to see you soon,

The Tyneside Cinema Team
